Private vs Small-Group Wine Tour in Santorini: Which Should You Book?

Updated October 2026 · Written by the Santorini Wine Adventure team

Short answer: book a small-group wine tour if you are one or two adults who mainly want the wineries and the tastings at the lowest price — €140–€150 per person, maximum 8–10 guests. Book a private tour if you have children or teenagers with you (they cannot join shared tours but join private ones free), if you are five or more, if you want a meal included, or if you want to choose your own start time and wineries. Both formats visit the same kind of estates, pour the same 12 wines and include hotel pickup.

When the small-group tour is the right choice

  • You are a couple or travelling solo. At €140 per person the Morning Wine Adventure is the cheapest way to see three wineries with a sommelier. A private tour for two costs €500.
  • You enjoy company. Tasting with a handful of other wine lovers is part of the fun for many guests, and the group never goes above 8–10 people.
  • The fixed times suit you. The morning tour starts around 10:00 am, Monday to Saturday; the Sunset Wine Tour runs daily in the afternoon and finishes with the sunset at Santo Wines.

When the private tour is the right choice

  • You are travelling with children. Under-18s are not allowed on the shared tours, but they can come on any private wine tour at no charge. Tell us the children’s ages when you book.
  • You are five or more. The private morning tour drops to €170 per person for five guests, only €30 more than the shared tour, and you have the vehicle and guide to yourselves.
  • You want a proper meal. Private tours can include a three-course lunch or a sunset dinner at Santo Wines; shared tours include snacks only.
  • You have a ship, flight or ferry to catch. A private tour can be timed around your schedule and can pick you up at the port or airport.
  • It is a special occasion. Honeymoons, proposals and birthdays are much easier to make personal when nobody else is in the vehicle.

Is the wine experience different?

Not really. On both formats you visit three wineries, walk among the low basket-trained vines, see the cellars and taste 12 wines from dry Assyrtiko to sweet Vinsanto with a wine-expert guide. On a private tour the guide’s attention is all yours, so it is easier to ask questions, go deeper into the styles you like, or spend longer at one estate. On a shared tour the guide paces the explanations for the whole group.

Frequently asked questions

How many people are on a small-group wine tour in Santorini?

Our small-group tours take a maximum of 8–10 guests, so everyone fits around the tasting table and can talk to the guide.

Can children go on a Santorini wine tour?

Not on the small-group tours, which are for guests aged 18 and over. Children and teenagers can join any of our private wine tours, free of charge.

Is a private wine tour better than a group tour?

It is more flexible and more personal, and it is the only option for families with children. A small-group tour gives the same wineries and wines for less money per person.

Can I turn a small-group tour into a private one?

Yes. Both our small-group tours can also run as private tours, which is also how we accommodate larger groups.

Do both tours include hotel pickup?

Yes. Pickup and drop-off are included on every tour. If your hotel cannot be reached by car, we meet you at a nearby point within walking distance.
